Wednesday 2nd October – bike****Bois de Trousse Chemise to Phare des Baleines - cloudy

We walked to the beach just at the end of the car park and saw lots of little birds eating seeds and lots more near the van. After breakfast we drove up the island to Les Portes-en-Re and followed the road round to the Plage de la Patache where we found a deserted camper aire and filled all our water bottles. Went back along the road a little to the Bois de Trousse Chemise, which has a very nice beach running along the edge of it. We parked up and got the bikes off and biked along another brilliant cycle path which took you out across the salt marshes and nature reserve (where we saw a flock of literally hundreds of godwits) then to the lighthouse at the tip of the island – Phare des Baleines. It is a great spot overlooking surfy waves. We had our lunch sitting on a seat just in front of the lighthouse and when we had finished walked through the shop and up the 267 steps to the top:) It was an amazing thing with all the steps going round and round until it reached a tiny bedroom with built in bed and then you stepped out onto a balcony which ran all the way round underneath the light. Great views all round including back across the island and out to sea. We were amazed that we didn’t have to pay for this and then as we were cycling away read the board outside saying we should have paid 3 euros each in the shop but they didn’t make that obvious and we just walked straight through without anyone saying a word! Cycled back along the east coast of the island through lots of pine trees, stopping every now and then to have a look at various beaches and some derelict ww2 bunkers. While I was exploring them Mag made stone sculptures on two fence posts starting with small flat stones and balancing bigger and bigger ones on top:) We left quickly before they fell down! Back at the van we had a cuppa and loaded the bikes up then drove back to the same spot as last night. No other camper vans here tonight
